Tianjin, one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government in China, is located in the northeast of the North China Plain and is the closest seaport to Beijing. The city is one of the biggest industrial and port cities in China and it is also known as "the diamond of the Bohai Gulf". Tianjin covers an area of 11,000 square kilometers (4,200 square miles) and has a population in excess of 10 million people.
The College of International Education at TUT is authorized by the Education Ministry of China to offer Chinese language programs that enable international students to gain proficiency in the Chinese language. Participants have ranged from the beginners to the advanced, who need a strong foundation in the language for various careers throughout the world, who are interested in Chinese culture, or who simply intend to live and travel in China. Apart from the language programs, elective courses such as Wushu (Chinese martial arts), Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese traditional musical instruments, Beijing opera, etc. are also available.

Tianjin University of Technology, a major university founded by the Tianjin Government, is a public university approved by the State Council in 1981. Tianjin University of Technology has the authority to offer Bachelor and Master degrees.
