The University founded in 1956, is situated in theworld-famous scenic city of Guilin. The campus lies north of the Qixing (Seven-star) Park, the Li River meandering to the west. With an elegant environment featuring lush green trees, quiet and peaceful, the university is an ideal place for academic study and research. Over the past decades the University has trained more than 40,000 qualified graduates and accomplished over 200 important research projects at both national and provincial levels, winning the National Science and Technology Advancement Awards and many other awards.

Currently the University consists of 15 teaching units, offering 42 undergraduate programs and 20 postgraduate programs. In co-operation with other universities, it also enrolls candidates studying for PhD degrees. With 18 scientific research institutions, 4 key disciplines of the provincial level, 1 key lab co-constructed by the province and the Ministry of Education, 4 key labs of the provincial level and 1 information engineering center, the University is a university where engineering takes the lead. The university’s overall co-ordinnated development includes 6 other disciplines: liberal arts, science, management, business, law and agriculture. At present, there are more than 15,000 students. Granted the authority by the Ministry of Education, the University may enroll students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. the University has signed research agreements on the friendly exchange and scientific research cooperation with 20 institutes and universities in 10 countries. These include Colorado University of USA, University of Central England in Birmingham and Middlesex University in Britain,etc. Since 1995, in cooperation with the British Royal Jewelry Association, the University has attained the best teaching quality among all locations in the worldwide FGA examination. Student extracurricular scientific and technology activities characterize the University. At the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th National College Student “Challenge Cup” Competitions in Science and Technology Projects, the University won 17 awards, ranking the 32nd, 18th, 20th, and 19th respectively among China’s colleges and universities, coming 1st in Guangxi. the University has won the title of the National “College Excellent Organization Prize ” 4 years in succession. It is the only unit to organize in Guangxi the “Challenge Cup” national college students extracurricular activities in academic and scientific technology works.

Since 2001, the initial employment rate of graduates is above 90%, the rates being 97.7% and 97.8% from 2003 to 2004. the University has won the titles of “Advanced Green Unit”, “Provincial Institution of Civilization”, “District of Civic Pride” and “Green University”. Since 1989, the University has been awarded the title of “Advanced Institution in Students Social Practice” by the State Publicity Department, the Ministry of Education and the Central Communist Youth League. In today’s world, the University adheres to the concept of scientific development to deepen the teaching reform in cultivating students’ creative spirit and competence, and to build a multi-discipline structure with its unique features to meet the needs of economic and social development, recognizing the priorities of traditional disciplines.
